Seek no farther

Francis is referring to my quote of John Chrysostom, in his homily on 2 Thessalonians, specifically 2:15, which I reproduce here:

“So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by Epistle of ours.

Hence it is manifest, that they did not deliver all things by Epistle, but many things also unwritten, and in like manner both the one and the other are worthy of credit. Therefore let us think the tradition of the Church also worthy of credit. It is a tradition, seek no farther. Here he shows that there were many who were shaken."

Looks Like a First Debate for the Blog

The first debate looks like it will be between an Internet poster named "Orthodox" and the present author, on the topic:

Resolved: "It is tradition, look no further" is less workable as applied to the theological content of the Westminster Confession of Faith than "The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it."

You'll recognize that the former mantra is attributed to an early Greek father, and the latter mantra is attributed to "fundamentalist" adherents to Sola Scriptura.

By way of clarification of resolutional intent, it is resolved that the former mantra does not work as well as (it's not as practical, as feasible, or as handy as) the second mantra when it comes to discussing theology (taking the WCF contents as an example of theology).
